went to the embassy yesterday, they helped me with an emergency passport, as i applied for a normal passport at the same time. took no more than 20 minutes. the emergency passport is, apparently first of all to help people get out of a country and home. but most countries accept that you travel with it for a limited time. and i'm just going to travel within schengen, so it shouldn't be that bad.
